Akismet is a great WordPress plugin, that fights spam on blogs. It filters spam in a new comment, trackback, or pingback. It works by combining information about spam captured on all participating blogs, and then using those spam rules to block future spam. Since it’s release in October 25, 2005, Akismet has captured more than a billion spam comments and pings. So, it is a great plugin for every WordPress blog.
Akismet service is free for personal use. For commercial use they have a “pro-blogger” service, that costs $5/month. Akismet comes bundled with the WordPress installation pack. To use it on your blog, you need a WordPress.com API key. Don’t worry, you can get one for free from WordPress.Com by opening an account. Once you have the API key, enter it from your Plugins Panel and activate the great spam fighter - Akismet.

If you want to show how many spam comments Akismet has caught on your blog, just add <?php akismet_counter(); ?> in your template (where you want the stats to appear).
You can view the spams caught by Akismet, under “Comments” in your Admin Panel. Check the caught spams and if you see a regular comment there, just click the “Not Spam” check-box and submit. It will go back to Akismet as a mistake and will help the system to learn!
