I saw a header ad, a sidebar ad, a footer ad, an inline ad, text link ads, and big links saying "buy an ad spot here". The big thing that people need to realize, which you mentioned, is that people aren't stupid! Something that says "BuY mE!!!!!111one" doesn't sell a product... but informed well written descriptions of how this product will make your life easier/better/whatever can help someone realize that they in fact could make use of this product.
