On Internet, a domain name provides an identity to a person or a business or a service. A domain name is an alphanumeric unique name that identifies individual web sites on the Internet. A domain name can include the letters of the English alphabet (A-Z), numbers (0-9), and hyphens (-).

The domain names must have a suffix or extension, called also TLD (Top Level Domain). The common suffixes are:

.com commercial business domain
.net commercial network
.org nonprofit organizations
.edu educational institution
.gov government agency

If you want a domain name for personal website, then use your name, surname etc. For your business, you can go for good phrases or keywords that relates to your business.

Some steps for choosing a good Domain name:

  • List out all the relevant keywords for your domain name. Think about as many words as you can, that you can relate to your preferred domain name and the content of your business/website/blog.
  • With those listed words, make different combinations that are short, easily memorable and related to the theme of your business/website/blog.
  • Use a good online tool, to search your domain name. Your domain registrar will help you in searching.
  • Start from the short words. Mind it, most of the good domain names have already been taken! Don’t be panic. Start with the next combination or keyword.
  • Still, if you are not getting any desired name, don’t worry! Try to add a specific word (noun, verb, adverb, adjective etc.) to your preferred keywords. You may end up in a dream domain name.
  • Choose the domain extension that suits your market or country. Still, .com extension is most preferable. If you get .com, grab it!

Take care about these points:

  • Avoid copyrighted names (name of companies, brands etc.) in your domain.
  • If possible do not use hyphens, numerical characters and abbreviations.
  • If possible, do not use ‘2′ for ‘to’, ‘4′ for ‘for’, ‘u’ for ‘you’ and ‘ur’ for ‘your’.
  • Try to avoid previously used domains. They may have a Google ban!
  • A .com is good. But, if you are serious about your brand image, try to get .net and .org also!
