How to Delete Your Facebook Account?

Written by EarnBlogger on February 14, 2008 Posted in: Internet, Social Media

Want to run away from Facebook but unable to do so? I mean want to delete your Facebook account permanently? I hope that you can do it now! Because, on Tuesday, Facebook updated the account deletion policies. Earlier Facebook has offered only a deactivation option, which keeps copies of your personal information on the company’s servers. For complete removal of your account you need to contact them. There is no automatic account deletion system in Facebook. This is really annoying for users, who wants to leave Facebook.

On Tuesday, Facebook has updated their help page with a new question “How do I delete my account?“. The answer for this question is:

If you do not think you will use Facebook again and would like your account deleted, we can take care of this for you. Keep in mind that you will not be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you have added. If you would like your account deleted, please contact us using the form at the bottom of the page and confirm your request in the text box.

Facebook supports the deactivation option, as many users deactivate their accounts for temporary reasons and expect their information to be there when they return to the service. But all users are not same. Many of them complained that even after contacting Facebook, they were unable to delete their accounts! That’s why, Nipon Das, 34, a director at a biotechnology consulting firm in Manhattan, called Facebook as the “Hotel California” – “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave”!

It took Mr. Das about two months and several e-mail contacts with Facebook’s customer service to erase his information from the site, which finally occurred after he sent an e-mail threatening legal action. But even after that, a reporter was able to find Mr. Das’s empty profile on Facebook and successfully sent him an e-mail message through the network.

Now Facebook says, a technical problem prevented the deletion of Mr. Das’s account. With the update of Tuesday, I hope that Facebook is going to take the matter seriously and will offer a good option for easy account deletion. What you think about it? Feel free to give your comments.
