Random Avatars for Comments with Ravatar Plugin

Want to customize the comments section of your blog? Want to use some custom images as the avatars of your blog commentators? Use Ravatar, a WordPress plugin based on Shamus Young’s Wavatars plugin. Ravatar plugin generates and assigns your custom icons to the visitors leaving comments at your WordPress blog. So it may help you in adding a personal touch to your blog comments!

Ravatar assigns an image to blog a commentator, based on the email address. So, a given visitor will get the same icon each time he/she comments on your blog. Ravatar is easily customizable to match your blog theme. You can use the default set of images or simply you can add your own! Supported image types are .jpg and .png. Visitors can optionally choose their own avatar by setting up a Gravatar.

  • Displays random images to the visitors leaving comments at your site.
  • You can customize the avatars to match your blog theme.
  • The icons are generated automatically.
  • Same icon for the same email address.
  • You can easily adjust the desired size for the icons.
  • Icons automatically precede the commenter’s name.
  • You can set a HTML tag to directly come before or after the icon.
  • If available, it can show the Gravatar for a given user.

How to use Ravatar Plugin:

  • Download the plugin.
  • Extract and upload it to your wp-content/plugins/ directory.
  • Activate the plugin from the ‘Plugins’ section of your wordpress dashboard.
  • It will start showing the default sets of icons.
  • To use your own set of icons, create some good icons and simply upload them to plugins/ravatars/parts directory.
  • From the Options ยป Ravatars page of your wordpress admin panel, adjust the size of your Ravatars and assign HTML to come before and after each image.

Ravatar plugin requires that your install of PHP support the GD library. If it doesn’t, the Ravatars won’t show up on your blog and you’ll get a warning in the Ravatar admin panel.     Hey thanks for the great review!

    One thing I wanted to explain is that by default the plugin will take random parts of images. So to customize you don’t have to create a bunch of icons, you can just upload pics that you like, and the plugin will take care of cropping random parts from those images to make the icons. But if you want to create your own individual icons and not have them randomly cropped, you can do that too!
