Written by EarnBlogger on June 26, 2009.

Earlier this week, Google announced the beta program of AdSense for Mobile Applications, which will allow mobile application developers to earn money from their application. It means, the next target of Google AdSense is the mobile applications market, which is growing day by day. So, mobile app developers get ready to earn some more money!

After a successful trial with a small group of partners, Google is now opening up the AdSense for Mobile Applications service to all developers of Android and iPhone applications. The timing is right! Smart phone users now spend more time on small mobile apps to do various tasks. Google AdSense for Mobile Applications will allow app developers to earn revenue by displaying text and image ads in their Android and iPhone applications. All they need to do is sign up for the beta program and implement AdSense directly in their applications.

“We’re excited to open up this beta to more developers, and look forward to offering new features for our mobile advertisers and publishers in upcoming releases.”

The implementation is easy and ads will be displayed automatically. Change Font Size in Google AdSense Ad Units

Written by EarnBlogger on June 19, 2009.

Google now allow AdSense publishers to change the font size in the text ad units. It means now you can easily select from small, medium, and large font sizes for your AdSense ad units on pages.  The font size option now appears on every account, but will be applied to ad units on web pages in Latin-character languages. Font size was one of the most requested features in AdSense, that Google announced on a official blog post earlier this week.

The font size you choose will be applied to the body of the ad, with the title scaled appropriately. In order to fit the ad text correctly, the actual font size will vary for each format size, font face, and user-specific settings such as browsers and operating systems. In addition, some formats sizes currently have very limited room, so the font size application will be most apparent in cases where the number of ads appearing in your ad units varies automatically in order to maximize your performance.

Google AdSense already have a option to specify desired font faces for ad units. Now, the ability to choose font size will help AdSense publishers in proper integration of ad units with website template or theme. You can select a new font size on an account-wide basis in the Ad Display Preference section of your My Account tab, or on an individual ad unit basis for new and existing ad units.

Google AdSense Font Size

The default font size for AdSense ad units is ’small’. But, soon Google will change the default font size from ’small’ to ‘medium’. Google’s internal testing showed that slightly larger font size improves performance. Note it done and test it on your own blog or website, with a different font size. After all you are using AdSense to get most out of your ad space. Isn’t it?

Google Ad Planner Publisher Center

Written by EarnBlogger on May 7, 2009.

To help Google AdSense publishers attract more advertisers towards their sites or blogs, Google recently launched a Publisher Center in their Ad Planner tool. The Google Ad Planner Publisher Center will allow AdSense publishers to market their sites by providing site description, ad format details and Google Analytics data.

Google Ad Planner is a free media planning tool that helps ad agencies and advertisers find websites relevant to their target audience. The Google Ad Planner Publisher Center is for those publishers who runs AdSense ads on their sites. Inside the Publisher Center, you can claim your sites and provide customized descriptions for each of them. Then you will be able to add up to five categories that describe your site’s content and ad formats your site support.

Moreover, you can add value to your site details by sharing your Google Analytics data. For example, you can choose to share the numbers of unique visitors and page views from your Google Analytics data. This will replace the Ad Planner traffic estimates and advertisers will be able to view the accurate site traffic details.

So, it was all about helping advertisers? Then how the Google Ad Planner Publisher Center will help AdSense publishers? Based on the information available through the Publisher Center, agencies and advertisers will be able to search and find appropriate sites relevant to their target audience. When more advertisers finds your site suitable for their campaigns and starts to bid, there will be competition among your ads. Ultimately the highest bids will appear first on your site and thus you should earn more from your site.

In order to start using Google Ad Planner Publisher Center, you need a Google Account. I am sure you have at least one. Sign in with that account, claim your site listing and update your profile in Google Ad Planner. If your site is really good in terms of content and traffic, you must get some good advertisers. What you say?

Users spend more time viewing Medium Rectangle Ads. So what?

Written by EarnBlogger on April 8, 2009.

Bigger is not always better! When it comes to performance of different online ad dimensions, 300 x 250 medium rectangles provide better exposure than bigger ad units such as 728 x 90 leaderboard and 160 x 600 skyscraper ads, because users spend more time viewing medium rectangle ads, findings of a Lotame study suggests. What does it mean to you? Let’s discuss some related points here.

Lotame is a platform for brands that enables targeted advertising to customizable audiences through social data. Based on 148.3 million ads served in 2009, Lotame conducted a study to measure if there are any differences in the average time spent on each of the IAB standard ad sizes. It found that internet users spent an average of 13 seconds viewing each 300 x 250 medium rectangle, 5.4 seconds viewing each 728 x 90 leaderboard, and 1.9 seconds viewing each 160 x 600 skyscraper ad.

It means internet users tends to ignore the ads that looks bigger? I think yes. Notice the difference between 13 seconds and 1.9 seconds. In my view, this is a big difference and it may have great impact on the success of an ad campaign. Well, the Lotame study didn’t looked at click-through rates and there is no way to tell how time spent on viewing ads is related with click-through rates.

What we can learn from this? From the point of view of an advertiser, more time spent on viewing an ad means more exposure and increases chances of a successful advertising campaign. Yes, there are many things such as geo-targeting, that you may need to consider while posting an ad. But can you expect better conversion from ads that not even make an impression at all? Think about it. Size does really matters in online advertising.

From publisher’s point of view, I always believe that medium rectangles offers better click-through rates and thus may help in increasing ad revenue. Now the Lotame study shows that users too love those ads. At least they look at them! Does it mean that you will get more clicks? Well, there is no evidence that more time spent on viewing an ad means more clicks. Still, you can expect some when compared to ads that users hardly look at! What you say?

But, the advertising rates depends on your website, ad position, content and other factors. So, your ad revenue will also depend on those factors. Then, how to maximize your income from ads delivered by ad networks such as Google AdSense? No matter what kind or what size of ad you use on your website, better placement of ads is most important for maximizing your ad revenue. Try to experiment with different ad sizes on different positions on your website. Monitor their performance and choose the one which performs best on your site.

Goodbye AdSense Video Units!

Written by EarnBlogger on March 29, 2009.

Finally, Google has decided to remove it’s ‘Video Units’ from AdSense. According to an official blog post, the decision was taken after it was found to have lesser impact than expected. It means video units, which used to show YouTube content, underperformed with AdSense and the result is retirement!

So, at the end of April 2009, this feature will be completely removed from the Google AdSense program and after that any remaining video units on AdSense publisher’s web pages will either direct users to YouTube.com or start showing top YouTube videos. From those videos you are not going earn a cent. That’s why Google recommends removing those video unit codes from your web pages as soon as possible. What about your past earnings? Don’t worry your pending earnings will be credited to your AdSense account.

Video Units - Earn Money

Personally I don’t like video ads, though it was a big hit for some people. The video units used to display two types of ads: companion ads, which appear in the player above the video content, or text overlay ads, which appears in bottom 20% of the video content when it is played. The idea was good. Make some money while entertaining your viewer. But, some people finds those ads annoying while viewing a video. They simply passes away, which ultimately may harm your income.

In my view, retiring video units was a good decision. Now you will get some exta ad space on your web pages, which you can optimize to display other ad units and make money online. Go and remove those video unit codes from your website or blog and find a suitable replacement for it. Initially you can try using other AdSense for Content ad formats.
