Thumbnail for Excerpts is a plugin for WordPress that will enable you to show thumbnail images on your blog post excerpts without using custom fields. It means that you don’t have to manually add a custom field to show thumbnail images on your post excerpts. And if you provide only partial feed, then thumbnails will appear also on your RSS feed.

How this plugin works? First it tries to find an image associated with the post. When an image exists, it will search for the thumbnail automatically created by WordPress. In case, the image was not uploaded via WordPress, Thumbnail For Excerpts will use the scaled version of the original image.

Installation of Thumbnail for Excerpts is very easy. Just download it, extract and upload to your “wp-content/plugins” directory. Then activate it from your WordPress dashboard and you are ready to spice up your post excerpts with cool thumbnail images! By default it will show thumbnail on left side of a post excerpt, with 100 set as width. The good thing is that you can easily change and adjust the size and alignment of thumbnail by editing the PHP file. You can even customize the look of thumbnails with the help of some CSS editing.

This plugin is awesome. I am going to try it out when I get home – perhaps I will try my hand at some PHP coding to make an admin screen so it’s easier to specific where the image should go, style class, etc

Do you know if the thumbnail come across in the RSS feed as its own data entity?

I am publishing the three most recent excerpts from my blog on a different site and would like to include a thumbnail but want to know what flexibility I have for formatting.
