If you are on Blogger platform and serious about blogging, then you should get a domain name for your blog. Wait, you don’t have to spend a cent for hosting! Blogger can host your blog on your own domain — for free. This is known as “Blogger Custom Domain” feature. It will help you to save some money and will give your blog an unique identity.
How to use the Custom Domain feature?
- To use the Custom Domain feature, you need to have a domain name. You can buy it from a Google partner or any other reliable domain registrar. It will hardly cost you $10. Remember, you don’t have to pay for hosting service in the next step.
- Once you have your domain name, you need to create a new CNAME record for your domain. The procedure varies depending on your domain registrar. You need to associate your domain with ghs.google.com. Mind it, it may take a couple of days to update the information.

- Now, you have your domain name and the DNS servers knows what to do with it! Log in to your Blogger account. Go to the Settings>Publishing section in your account. There you will see an option for ‘Custom Domain’. Follow that link and enter your domain.

- Save your settings and continue blogging. Don’t forget to tell others about your new domain!
Some points to remember:
- Make sure that all the DNS servers have been updated with your CNAME record. Wait at least two days, before changing the Blogger settings.
- You can publish your blog to an external FTP server. But for this you need to use the ‘Classic Template’.
- You may use domains (e.g. mysite.com) and subdomains (e.g. blog.mysite.com). But no sub-directories (e.g. mysite.com/blog) and wildcards allowed.
