Wordpress is going social! Matt Mullenweg, the creator of popular blogging platform WordPress, said in a blog post on Tuesday that WordPress parent company Automattic has hired designer and developer Andy Peatling to go social”. Andy Peatling is the creator of BuddyPress, a WordPress MU-based social network.

So, BuddyPress has officially become a part of Automattic and it’s home page reflects it. Now the home page of BuddyPress says “BuddyPress will transform a vanilla installation of WordPress MU into a social-network platform.” A logo of Automattic is also appearing on it.

Matt wrote on his blog:

It’s clear that the future is social. Connections are key. WordPress MU is a platform which has shown itself to be able to operate at Internet-scale and with BuddyPress we can make it friendlier. Someday, perhaps, the world will have a truly Free and Open Source alternative to the walled gardens and open-only-in-API platforms that currently dominate our social landscape.

So, Wordpress is moving towards social networking? The future is really promising for Automattic with over 2.5 million blogs hosted on Wordpress.com and a good amount of funding! Let’s wait some time to see the results of BuddyPress and Automattic mixture!
